Membership Meeting: News and Action Plans

At the membership meeting June 23, Chair Adam Cardo announced that we passed our new bylaws, updated to reflect our increased membership since they were adopted at our founding in 2006 (see madsa.ga). He also introduced our new officer Ilani Lorber (photo, top.) The other officers appointed Lorber to the at-large position recently vacated by Anat Fintzi, who is on maternity leave, after Ilani won the online membership poll. Thanks to all three candidates for volunteering to serve. (Anat and Scott, we look forward to meeting our youngest member when the time comes!)

José Perez reported on national DSA’s “rapid response” conference call led by the DSA Immigrant Rights Committee and allies that drew 800 participants last Thursday to address the current crisis. We also heard reports from MADSA’s working groups, including two that have formed since our last meeting: Immigrant Justice (see previous post), and Accessibility (Photo above: Speck reporting). As usual, the second hour was devoted to working group meetings. These groups plan ways to advance our activism in a variety of important areas and are listed on this website. Not surprisingly, the Immigration Justice group drew the most participation, led by José. MADSA will have a contingent at the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights’ march starting 3pm on Thurs, June 28 from Woodruff Park to the ICE headquarters, and at the rally called by the Georgia Alliance for Social Justice (we are a partner) and other groups starting at 10am on Sat., June 30 at the Atlanta Detention Center. Look for our banner.
